A surprise cold front has cooled things down at Truman Lake—and the fish are taking notice.

According to professional guide Mark Huey, the crappie have started pushing off structure and are holding tighter to the bottom in 10 to 15 feet of water. “You’re not finding them right at the base of the trees like before,” Mark says. “Now they’re maybe 15 to 20 yards off, balled up and sitting low.” The bite is still there, especially on DNS Brush Buster spoons tipped with minnows. Mark also experimented with Wild Willy jigs, which worked but weren’t quite as productive.

The catfish are beginning to roam, and the anchor bite is picking up. Mark saw solid marks in 12 to 16 feet of water and noted that a noodle setup could do some damage on the flats. With shad moving lower in the water column, the cats are sure to follow.

White bass are still scattered, but small groups are showing up on humps and in the trees. As the lake continues to cool from its current 78.4°F, expect the white bass action to pick up sharply.

Mark is heading to Canada with the Lund 2075 Pro V Bass this week, but he’s still got limited availability this fall. September is almost full, but there are a few afternoon trips left. October through December is wide open for those looking to close out the year with a bang.
