It may be October, but the weather feels more like summer, and the fishing is showing it. According to Mark Huey of Mark Huey’s Guide Service, crappie, catfish, and white bass are all holding steady, waiting for that first big cool-down.

Crappie – Fish are holding in 10–15 feet of water, with minnows producing best. Some fish have lifted off the bottom, and while there are plenty of fish around, the trick is finding the schools that want to eat. Moving often is the key.

Catfish – The bite is decent, especially in stump fields. The challenge is getting fish out of the heavy cover — many are lost to roots and branches. Some anglers are catching fish on planer boards and noodles, though the bite isn’t in full swing yet. With water temps still warm, catfish are feeding on stump moss instead of shad. Once temps drop, expect a strong bite.

White Bass – Action remains slow, with most fish suspended on timber. On windy days, some can be caught on points or by casting inline spinners, though lure losses are likely.

As water temperatures cool, fishing should improve across the board. Mark has limited availability for fall trips, so now’s the time to book.
